Labor News: March 25, 2013 Issue

Upcoming Projects:

Elderlee was low bidder on the NY/DOT Overhead Sign – Sign Panel Replacements Project (Monroe County)

Babcock was low bidder on the Shriver Stadium Turf Field – Lighting Installation Project (Monroe County)

CP Ward was low bidder on the Road Improvements Project (Monroe County)

CP Ward was low bidder on the NY/DOT 1-10 Emergency Bridge Repaid Project (All Counties)

Cardona was low bidder on the NY/DOT Guide Rail Replace/Install Project (Yates County)

Union Concrete was low bidder on the NY/DOT Emergency Bridge Repair Project (Yates County)

Steve General was low bidder on the Lincoln Park School No. 44 Renovations Project (Monroe County)

Member News:

  • Upcoming Work: We have asphalt work coming up and need people who can do Automation/Screws and Asphalt Rakers. Please put your name on a list at the hall for a screening call near the end of March.
  • Certificates: Please register all your certificates with the Training Department. 585-546-8460. The work season is quickly approaching and if we do not have your certificates on file we cannot fill requirements on certain job requests. Examples: Asbestos, Boom Lifters, Hazardous Waste, Line & Grade, etc.
  • Softball Team: If anyone is interested in a Union softball team please contact Ace Roundtree at 585-775-3229. If there’s enough interest, more info will follow.
  • Save The Date: The Labor Union Summer Picnic will be on June 8, 2013 in Charlotte. There will be BBQ, beverages, prizes & kids games. (More info to follow)
  • Discount Auto Insurance: The question was brought up at the December Union meeting about discount auto insurance. While we cannot offer that, we have found a driver safety course through AAA that can save you 10% on auto insurance. They even have an online course for the computer savvy at www.AAA.com/defensivedriving.  There is a fee of $35 for AAA members and $41 if you are not an AAA member. They have classes in the Rochester, Buffalo & Syracuse areas. You can call (800) 836-2582 for more information or stop down to the Union Hall to pick up a flier (Rochester Area) or call to have one mailed to you. There is more information posted on our website as well.
  • Win a Free Trip: Union members can register to win a Free Disney Dream Vacation for Four through Union Plus. Go to www.Unionplus.org/contest to enter.

Funds Office

  • The Fund Office will only accept New York State Department of Labor Official Record of Benefit Payment History as proof for the SUB Benefit. If you do not have a computer a home the Union Hall has computers you can come in and use or you can go to your local library.
  • Subpay: Any unemployment information being mailed in needs to be mailed to the Fund Office 18 Fourth St. Rochester NY 14609. Call with questions: 585-235-3906.

Training and Apprenticeship:

The work season will be starting up soon so now is the time to take advantage of training classes offered to our members. This is a great way to make yourself and our union more marketable. The more you know, the better your chances of continued work are. A complete list of available classes is listed below.

April 1-5, 2013                        Hazardous Waste Worker                  

April 8-12, 2013                      Asbestos Worker

April 15-19, 2013                    Basic Line and Grade

April 22-26, 2013                    Laser level Technology

April 29, 2013                         Asbestos handler Refresher

April 30, 2013                         Hazardous Waste Refresher  

All Classes will begin at 8 am at the Training Center in Oswego, NY, unless otherwise noted. For a complete list of courses offered on training and apprentice related classes or if you have questions, please call the training office at (585) 546-8460.

  • The calendar has been posted on the website for upcoming classes. There is a $10 refundable deposit on any classes you sign up for. Please call the training office at (585) 546-8460               

Reminders:

Baseball Tickets: We have tickets for the 2013 Red Wings Baseball season at the hall. You can get 6 tickets every 10 days. (While supplies last)

Out-Of-Work: To keep your name on the out-of-work list it must be updated every 14 days otherwise the computer will kick it off at the end of the 14th day.

Pictures: Please send us any pictures of projects you are working on. We would like to post them to our website or on our Facebook page. You can visit us on Facebook at Laborers Local 435.

Contact Info: Be sure that we have your current address and phone number. This will save a lot of time, and makes it easier to find you when you get the call to go to work.

Union Meeting:

Our next union meeting is Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at 8 pm in the large meeting hall. We will have pizza and wings at this meeting.

Retirees will meet an hour earlier at 7 pm in the conference room. You can also find this information posted on our website.
